Seedstock Improvement Sales

The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association invites you to participate in the 2012 Seedstock Improvement Sales scheduled for Friday night, March 30, at Muskingum Livestock in Zanesville, and on Saturday afternoon, April 14, at the Union Stock Yards in Hillsboro. The Seedstock Improvement Sales are open to consignments from all members of the OCA and all breeds of bulls.

Current feeder calf prices have reached all-time highs over the past year. The Seedstock Improvement Sales provide you the opportunity to market quality bulls during times of excellent demand. These sales offer an affordable way to market bulls in a setting that features elite animals from multiple breeds in one location and on one day. Buyers have the assurance of purchasing bulls with known genetics, a completed vaccination regimen, and that have passed a breeding soundness exam.

Bulls are required to have Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs). They will be placed in sale order based on a within breed evaluation system using EPDs for birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, milk, intramuscular fat, and rib-eye area. Bulls can be one to five years of age. History of the sales indicates that bulls 18 months and older command a higher sale price. Each bull must also pass a Breeding Soundness Exam prior to the sale, have proper health documentation, and completed a required set of vaccinations.

New for 2012: Consignors will be allowed to substitute bulls for entries made to the Seedstock Improvement Sales. See Seedstock Improvement Sale Requirements for more information on substitution rules.

As of 2011, all bulls are required to be tested for Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) persistent infection (PI) status. See health requirements section on enclosed sheet for more information.

For more information, download the consignment requirements, vaccination form, and consignment form. The vaccination form needs to accompany the bulls to the sales.

Consignments must be postmarked by Tuesday, January 31, 2012 and mailed to OCA. Should you have any questions, contact John Grimes, OSU Extension Beef Coordinator and Sale Manager, at 937-763-6000 or email grimes.1@osu.edu.
